Chocolate Chip Cookie School 4: Trader Joe’s Cookie Comparison & Taste Test

Kids LOVE this fun and engaging real-world comparison, cost analysis, and taste test of 2 different Trader Joe’s chocolate chip cookies that kids can do solo or partnered up with other students.

FUN FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, HOME SCHOOL, SUMMER & AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITY

What’s inside a chocolate chip cookie? A surprising number of fun lessons in decision making, shopping and deep thinking.

This is the perfect project-based learning activity to delight your class or home school with an educational treat!

It stands alone or as part 4 in the Chocolate Chip Cookie School series — a 5-part series (approx 5-10 hours teaching time) that turns curious students into 21st Century geniuses!

WHAT KIDS LEARN

This 30-minute activity teaches decision making, comparing and contrasting and taste testing among other topics.

Students also see how basic math comes in handy for calculating costs and good values, cookie quantities and nutritional information. (The multiplication, division and subtraction maps to 3rd grade Common Core.)

The simple act of thinking about cookies packs in 21st Century Skills kids can take home and apply to their lives as consumers to make smart choices about other foods and products.

IT’S TESTED!

I’ve taught this “critical thinking through cookies” activity with several elementary school classes and after school programs at libraries – and it always gets the thumbs up from kids, parents and teachers.

ACTIVITY COST

You need access to a Trader Joe’s store; the activity for 48 students will cost about $10 including copying the handout.

FEEDBACK ON THE ACTIVITY AND TEACHING GUIDE IS MOST WELCOME! Hope you enjoy…would love to hear your teaching stories too.
